Ask the Internet

reading

You don't listen to advice from your mother. You don't want advice from your best friend. You ignore advice from your therapist. What you want is to have anonymous strangers on the Internet tell you what to do.

We understand and we're here for you.

morning
Our very first question of the day. Aww. Enjoy.

Dear net, I did something realy stupid my senior year of HS I wish I could take back. I took some pics with my digital camera for my boyfriend of myself naked. We were together for years after that but eventualy broke up bcause he was jealous all the time. He's really got a backstabber side to him and I'm worried about what he might do with the pics. I tok them at 17 and I'm 20 now. I wany to be a journalist and I worry about what would happen if anybody found out about this pics. I know that kind of stuff can ruin somebodies life, but it just seemed romantic at the time. What can I do to make sure he doesn't do something with those pics?

Threaten legal action, reminding him that you were under age at the time, if he brings up the pictures in a threatening manner. Your second choice, if he passes them around school or some such, is to take a page from Madonna's '80s playbook. When her nudes appeared in Penthouse, her response was a great big "So what?" which would likely squelch most of a scandal for a non-public figure. If he doesn't believe he can hurt you with the pictures, they're much more likely to go into his recycle bin.
  • You're out of high school now and, really, I think that's the most likely time for something like that to come out and be a big deal. Unless you become a famous talking head for the Christian Right, chances are nobody is really going to care that there are naked pictures of you that an ex-boyfriend took.

However, it would be illegal for your ex-boyfriend to share those pictures, since you'd been underage when they were taken. If he actually started threatening you, I'd point that out to him and mostly you really shouldn't sweat it. Things like that happen, especially since it's so easy for people to use digital technology for naughty purposes nowadays. Maybe in ten years, everyone will have a sex video making the rounds on the Internet. o_O
